In the Words of Herman Goering |
During the Vietnam protests of the late 60's and early 70's, I found a quote from German Nazi, Herman Goering, which he made at the Nuremberg Trials. The quote is as potent today as it was in 1970 or 1947.
The piece is written for four voices and 5 instruments. The instrumental accompaniment is a serial rhythm pattern with variations. The vocal parts are written not with notes, but with instructions for picking notes. The vocal parts almost become a kind of Sprechstimme (spoken song).
This recording was made and then played at one of Eastman's composer forums. It created such a stir, that it was played three times in that concert.
I conducted this performance with members of the Eastman Opera and Eastman Wind Ensemble.
